Course Description
This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to participate in rescue operations as a member of a rescue team; it underpins specialist rescue operations. This includes a wide range of rescue and environmental situations which may incorporate industrial, rural, bush and extreme environmental conditions.
Typically, personnel performing these roles have completed induction or recruitment training and are commencing work as a member of an operational team. They will work under supervision in a team but may be responsible for completing singular tasks relating to a rescue.
It is applicable to personnel from the emergency services, volunteer organisations and/or associated industries.
Course Content
This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to conduct telescopic materials handler operations in the Resources and Infrastructure Industries.
This course includes:
- Prepare and respond to rescue
- Contribute to a risk assessment at the scene
- Perform rescue
- Conclude rescue operations

Pre-Requisites – only if undertaking training related to the fire sector
The fire sector is those sections of government departments, statutory authorities or organisations that have responsibility under jurisdictional arrangements for the delivery of firefighting and fire management services.
It is essential that the prerequisite units listed below are obtained prior to the issuance of this unit to individuals within the fire sector or the units contributing to the attainment of a fire qualification. HLTAID011 Provide first aid
Licensing Information
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at present.
Selection Criteria
- Minimum 18 years
- Photo ID check
- Basic command of English language
- Reading and writing – a learner must be able to read, comprehend and write a range of texts
- Oral communication – a learner must be able to use and respond to spoken language
- Basic ability in mathematics for formulas and load chart calculations
- Must have necessary health and fitness to carry out duties safely
- Successful completion of LLN skills assessment (if necessary)
Qualification/Certification
On successful completion candidates will receive
- Statement of Attainment – issued by HPA Training
- Plastic wallet sized photo card – issued by HPA Training

Mode of Assessment
Assessments both theory and practical will be explained to students at the commencement of the course and conducted throughout the course duration. Some examples of assessment will be group participation, theory questions, work type activities and practical demonstrations and observations.
Locations
Training/assessment can be conducted at HPA Training Facility –1 Marina Close Mt. Kuring-Gai NSW or on your site providing the following requirements are met:
- Signed agreement to train on site
- All necessary equipment on HPA Trainings equipment list available and in good condition
- Training room with tables, chairs and screen (or blank wall for a projector)
- Suitable clear operating area
- Operational live worksite.
